As chief operating officer of Calloway Consolidated Group, Chris Calloway, the area franchise owner for Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Northeast Florida, Calloway says Five Guys Burgers and Fries looks for sites with great visibility, parking and the demographics for its menu, which is limited to burgers, hot dogs and fries. “Everybody likes burgers,” said Calloway COO of Five Guys Burgers and Fries at Town Center.

The chain is based in Lorton, Va., near Washington, D.C.

Calloway said Five Guys prefers to locate restaurants seven to 10 miles from each other, although they could be closer if it’s a high-volume area.

Calloway said the Five Guys Town Center is six miles from the restaurant along Southside Boulevard near The Avenues Mall. “Both have been very good for us.”

The Jacksonville Five Guys sales volume is slightly lower than in other more densely populated areas of Florida, but is about 7 percent higher than the average for Five Guys nationwide, he said. “Jacksonville is a very strong market and a good market for what we’re doing,” he said. “We certainly see this area as having the opportunity to grow.”

Calloway said Jacksonville’s many neighborhoods also allow the chain to open as the neighborhood burger joint. “That is something that is really important ot us,” he said. “When we go into these neighborhoods, each is its own little town in a big city.”

For locations, Five Guys looks for the end-cap, the end store, in a shopping center, “but we’re certainly willing to consider other options.”

A prototypical Five Guys restaurant is 2,700 to 3,000 square feet. Average seating is about 90.

The franchise territory stretches from the Florida-Georgia state line to Gainesville and Palm Coast. Calloway said there are 11 stores, with nine in Jacksonville, one in St. Augustine and one in Gainesville.

The franchise group has an agreement for 25 restaurants including the one St. Johns Town Center, which Calloway said all 25 could be completed by 2014.

Broncos game designated “Teal Sunday”

The Jacksonville Jaguars have designated Sunday, September 12 as “Teal Sunday” as the club opens the 2010 regular season against the Denver Broncos. Fans are encouraged to wear teal on game day to show support of the team. The Jaguars are selling a limited edition “We Are Jaguars” teal t-shirt for $5.

The shirts are available at Jacksonville area Football Fanatics and Sports Mania stores. In addition, the shirts will be on sale at the West Touchdown Club merchandise store at EverBank Field on Friday, September 10 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

EverBank Kickoff Pep Rally

EverBank will help fans get “Back to Football” by hosting a Kickoff Pep Rally on Friday, September 10 from 5-8 p.m. at the St. Johns Town Center. The event will be held on the south side of the Town Center near Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The free event will feature appearances by linebacker Kirk Morrison and defensive tackles Terrance Knighton and Tyson Alualu along with the ROAR of the Jaguars, the D-Line and Jaxson de Ville. Several Jacksonville COX radio stations are supporting the event with week-long promotions. Fans are also being invited to “Get Your Teal On” for the pep rally with prizes available for fans showing off the best “Teal Spirit.”

Jaguars wives to hold NFL Play 60 event

Several wives of Jaguars players, coaches and staff will hold a special NFL Play 60 event on Friday for fifth graders at Finegan Elementary School in Atlantic Beach at 10 a.m.

The NFL PLAY 60 campaign is designed to tackle childhood obesity by getting kids active through in-school, afterschool and team-based programs, online child-targeted outreach on NFLRUSH.com, and many partnerships with like-minded organizations.

The NFL and United Way are teaming up for Back to Football Friday, a campaign to make youth health and wellness a priority. Fans are encouraged to show their NFL team pride at work and at school on Friday, in celebration of the start of the NFL season.

Quizno’s Dancer changes Teams – Dancing for Whisky River!

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — He became pretty famous for his work at the St. Johns Town Center, dancing with a Quizno’s sign. He’s back.

David Nguyen, 19, wore the shoulder-strapped sign advertising the sandwich maker, and made sure he was noticed.

He didn’t just wave and smile. He danced. And danced, and danced and danced.

Then the Quizno’s closed and he was out of work.

He’s back on the street with a new sign over his shoulders: Whisky River.

The new club at the Town Center hired Nguyen, who said he’s happy to be back doing what he does

“Life is short,” he said. “I just want to be happy every day.”

He listens to music to help him find the rhythm, and he got lucky today. “It feels really good outside.”

Nguyen said he’s glad to be working on Labor Day at St. Johns Town Center, saying if he had the day off, it would be a “day wasted.”
