Sheraton Jacksonville Hotel’s new owners are giving the hotel’s restaurant a local taste by rebranding it with a name similar to Bold City Brewery’s own and solely serving the Jacksonville-made suds on draft.

The Bold City Grill, formerly Shula’s 347, will have decor supplied by Bold City Brewery and its signs will resemble the brewer’s logo featuring the city skyline, said Raymond Smith, the general manager of the 159-room hotel at 10605 Deerwood Park Blvd., off Gate Parkway. Bold City Brewery co-owner Sue Miller said the Riverside microbrewery didn’t receive any money for the hotel’s use of “bold city” because the name isn’t copyrighted.

She said the partnership with the hotel will give the brewery more name recognition and one more restaurant that carries its product. Smith said the restaurant will continue to offer steaks, but it will provide more “moderately-priced comfort food,” with an average lunch between $10 and $15. Dinners range from $20 to $30.

He said Texas-based Aimbridge Hospitality, which purchased the hotel for $16.1 million earlier this month, struck a similar deal with a local brewer for its restaurant in Four Points By Sheraton Kansas City Airport in Kansas City, Mo.

[Aimbridge] told us to find a local brewery that was well-liked and well-known and reach out,” said Smith.

Bold City Brewery’s beer is available in more than 130 Northeast Florida bars and restaurants. The company, founded in 2008, aims to sell their beer in Winn-Dixie, Publix and other supermarket by mid-2011.

From the Times Union. Not a glowing review, but I’d be willing to bet  the service has improved. Shula’s had HORRIBLE service. Probably some left over processes that need to be revamped.>

Appetizers are the way to go here.

  • The Cheese-filled Crispy Ravioli ($9) was a pleasant nosh.
But they may have been a packaged treat similar to something you could buy at the grocery store.
  • The Hand-Cut Onion Rings ($8) are large and golden. They weren’t greasy and matched perfectly with our Chinook Indian Pale Ale and Great White Cream Ale.
  • The best of the bunch was the Blackened Tenderloin Tips ($14). They were cooked to medium rare, and fully coated with a light, blackening blend. The serving was an ample portion for sharing.

Unfortunately, our entrees were ordinary. My complaint about this restaurant isn’t the execution (except for the crab cake); it’s about the product it chooses to serve its customers. Management has settled for the inexpensive cuts and pre-packed ingredients. That is not acceptable at these prices. They offer sandwiches and salads, but then why eat at the hotel when a variety of places are just down the road.
