The South Florida-based Pollo Tropical at Jacksonville Town center grilled chicken chain is offering its Family Meal for just $11.11 from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11.

You’ll get an entire marinated chicken, family white rice and beans and four dinner rolls for 11.11.

Half chicken, mojo roast pork, a half-rack of ribs, eight wings, or two boneless chicken breasts can be added for $5 each as part of Pollo Tropical’s “Create Your Own Family Meal” option.

Maggiano’s at the St. Johns Town Center gets a Zumba Flash Mob!

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Customers at Maggiano’s at the St. Johns Town Center got quite a surprise this afternoon.

A Zumba flash mob broke out around the Italian eatery to celebrate National Dance Day.

The group performed a six minute choreographed routine.

Christine Vinson participated. She said, “I love flash mobs and I thought it was a really cool thing to do. And I thought it would be really fun to just get out here in a crowded spot and just do it for fun.”

More than 100 dancers participated in today’s flash mob.

But some restaurants have to take extra precautions. P.F. Chang’s China Bistro at the St. Johns Town Center has an extensive gluten-free menu, and operating partner Geoff Atherton said the restaurant is well-prepared to ensure those items are not contaminated by gluten on other dishes.
“We have a whole station in the kitchen dedicated to gluten-free,” he said.

The station includes separate woks with colored tags to ensure they are not used on other items, and P.F. Chang’s even has separate plates it uses to serve gluten-free dishes.
Meanwhile, in a pizza place, dust from pizza dough can easily fly through the air. But Tommy d’Esterhazy of Tommy’s Brick Oven Pizza makes every effort to see to it that his gluten-free pizzas are not contaminated. He understands the need because he is gluten-free himself.

“We prepare all of our toppings that are going to go on the pizza in a separate area,” he said. The pizzas are placed on parchment paper before going in the oven to ensure that they don’t pick up leftover gluten. “There’s no chance for it to touch the stone,” d’Esterhazy said.

Even restaurants that don’t have gluten-free menus can offer safe dining experiences for celiacs.

“Basically, we can make almost any dish gluten-free,” said Pam Butterworth, maitre d’ at Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant in the St. Johns Town Center. Maggiano’s uses gluten-free corn pasta to substitute for regular pasta.

California Pizza Kitchen in Jacksonville Town Center is bringing gluten-free pizza

California Pizza Kitchen introduced a gluten-free menu that had no pizza on it. But here’s some good news. California Pizza Kitchen in Jacksonville Town Center is going to bring gluten-free pizza to its only Jacksonville location in late June.

Most pizzas on the California Pizza Kitchen in Jacksonville Town Center menu will be available gluten-free, unless the toppings themselves contain gluten. The gluten-free pizza is is part of a new menu.

In front of the Costco, near the Town Center, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse is building a new restaurant. BJ’s Brewhouse will offer a gluten-free menu with thin crust pizza, as well as their Redbridge brew.

Other great gluten-free pizza in Jacksonville: Brucci’s Pizza, which has three area locations, the Mellow Mushroom, and Tommy’s Brick Oven Pizza on Southside Boulevard.
